To visit an exhibition is to learn and to perceive, to experience something unique with the items and the narrative that is presented. This combination is the strength of the museum, in my opinion. The power of the museum has gradually moved towards including the visitors need for experience, more than strictly based on facts. This gives us many possibilities to work with source criticism and to let the museum be a place for amusement and discussion.
An exhibition presents staged knowledge and it is all about the space created by the items and its content. Adding clothes in this room is a great way to add an extra dimension to both the experience of learning and entertainment.
My goal is to bring life to the narrative with help from textiles, by using clothes as a means of communication. My dream is to create exhibitions about fashion and use clothing as a way to enhance storytelling and the experience of the exhibition.
My thesis focus on the exhibition Power Games presented at the Royal Armoury in Stockholm from the 14th of March 2014 until the 5th of January 2015. It involves the practice of history in popular culture. I intended to investigate the elements of this staging and took an interest in the different power plays within the exhibition. The thesis discusses museums and exhibitions ways of staging knowledge, and the costumes as an imported part of the interpretations of history.
The course's starting point was to acquire knowledge and skills about exhibition production. With the theoretical and historical points of departure, the exhibition was studied as a medium.
Stockholm University 2015
Over the years I have practiced at the aforementioned museum. Among other things, I have worked with research, written exhibition texts and searched for visual material. I have been part of the production team at each museum and worked out concepts for interactive solutions in the exhibition room. It has been educational and given me the taste to work with storytelling activities that include both theoretical, practical and creative work.
